Creating headlines that grab attention is an art form of its own.

The subtle use of psychology can help entice a reader to invest his or her time in reading your article.

Everyone wants insider knowledge and combined with that fact, if you present a core benefit plus trigger a level of curiosity in your headline, any reader will find it difficult to ignore your headline.

‘The Secret of Good Dog Obedience ’, could be one such example.

‘Little Known Ways to Train your Dog‘, could be another.

As could; ‘What Every Dog Handler Needs to Know’.

For a visitor to comply with a call to action, they must first realise the need for your product.

Traditionally in sales, a problem is identified first and then a solution, your product, is offered.

A perfect example of this can be found in infomercials.

This method continues to work well.. however, presenting the visitor with a problem so early on is not always the most effective way to make a sale.

By immediately triggering a negative or painful thought pattern in your visitor’s mind, you risk creating a chain reaction of thoughts that can lead to the visitor making the purchase in panic or in haste, especially when the solution is offered at the click of a button.

But surely this is a great way to generate sales, you may be thinking.

At first glance well, it may appear so, but items bought in haste or panic are rarely valued by the customer afterwards because he did not spend enough time with his internal dialogue to convince himself that he is making a sound judgement that your

product is the right one. He bought your product because he

felt like it could stop the pain caused by introducing the problem.

Soon he realises that the purchase was made in a fabricated and imposed need for the product instead of a natural desire.

In the Internet Marketing world, we strive to build a loyal and happy customer base instead of encouraging our customers to purchase while in rushed negative states, who later have a feeling of regret about the product.

How many times have you made an impulse buy that you didn’t need or looking back, didn’t really want? It’s a very common feeling and completely natural to make these rushed decisions.

Common triggers include the perceived rationing of products to create a sense of scarcity.

Savvy marketers working for supermarkets will run ‘a special offer’ on a selected item. For example, the supermarket will claim that just for the next 10 minutes or so a product is on sale at a massively discounted price – or even only place a limited number of items on the shelves to create the impression of scarcity.

Savvy marketers know how to over-ride the feelings of regret, by giving the customer a good long term excuse or reason, for making the purchase. Also savvy marketers know the importance of creating the illusion that the customer has purchased a bargain – making the customer feel like they have almost taken advantage of the supermarket.

This technique can of course be applied to any product on the Internet in a variety of ways.

By presenting visitors with the immediate image of a positive outcome by purchasing your product, ignoring their problem and going straight to the benefits, your visitor will trigger a new, more rewarding thought pattern.

Bear in mind that the most effective marketing material also acknowledge but most importantly remove potential doubts that might play in your visitors mind. This works best if when acknowledging a potential doubt, you can skilfully spin it into a positive.

And it is still of course important to create empathy with your visitor, but it can be done by expressing a common or shared goal rather than a common or shared problem.

This sense of unity and belonging is essential for long term happy customers. If done through positive affirmations, such as stating an ‘undeniable fact’, a bond of trust between you and your visitor can be formed quicker.

What is more, if your ‘undeniable fact’ has real value to your visitor, it is easier to move them into a more persuasive state of mind. For example, affirming the fact that we need to be greener to combat climate change, is something your visitor will surely agree with.

Now imagine the same technique applied to your niche, with an ‘undeniable fact’ that is valued by your visitor.

This process is called ‘pacing’. Pacing is a great technique for building instant rapport with your visitor, but alone it serves little value unless it leads to action, or

in our case, a sale.

This is where ‘leading’ comes in, a technique that is used in conjunction with ‘pacing’, to influence thoughts and behaviour.

This is a form of mild hypnosis.

In addition to our ‘undeniable fact’ we also include a second statement, which contains subtle commands.

Our visitor assumes the first statement to be true, and subconsciously assumes the second statement to also be true, because they are used in conjunction.

An example, if exploring our ‘greener living’ niche, could be: “As we all need to be greener to combat climate change, taking direct action in our daily lives is the only solution, check out our top 50 easy ways to decrease your carbon footprint.“

We pace with the first part of the statement ‘As we all need to be greener to combat climate change’ and then affirm a second fact but begin to ‘lead’ by implying that our visitor needs to take action – a somewhat more blatant command by saying; ‘taking direct action in our daily lives is the only solution’, and finally a second command; ‘check out our top 50 easy ways to decrease your carbon footprint’.

As you will no doubt now be aware, this technique of pacing and leading can be extremely powerful. ‘Embedded commands’ on their own can be used in a manner of ways and are incredibly effective if used in video or audio, thanks to the ability to give command and mask or disguise them, appearing a less obvious to the listener.

Here is one such example:

“We’re pleased to announce the launch of our new product. By now you’ll be aware that we packed so much info into it, we were late to get it on our website. Now, we’re sure you’ll be relieved to finally own it.”

Did you hear the subliminal commands in that short example? I will run through them, but as you were expecting to hear hidden commands you will have picked up on them faster. If this technique is used on the unsuspecting listener, the impact is greatly improved as you speak directly to their subconscious

mind.

Let’s explore the commands in more detail.

You may wish to skip back and listen again a few times.

The first sentence ‘we’re pleased to announce yada yada..’ might indeed be a fact but not necessarily one of value to your

visitor, yet.

The second sentence ‘By now you’ll be aware..’ is spoken as ‘buy now’ – a direct command to purchase, and combined with a click or subtle background noise it further tells the subconscious mind to place importance to those words, “Buy Now”.

The use of minor noises or fabricated mistakes during recordings can play a powerful role in influencing your visitors.

If using video, subtle gestures or movements can also be highly effective.

The sentence ‘we were late to get it on our website’ leads to create a fusion of two sentences, notice the quick start at the beginning of the final sentence, to form the direct command ‘get it on our website now’.

This technique can be expanded again to move your visitors into a more elaborate state of trance and a heightened state of suggestibility.
